Thank you for supporting Community Chest Dress Casual Day today.
This week was a busy week of catching up on assessments. Students did an amazing job with their Dance assessment, I will be sharing those videos with you via Google Classroom.
What is RIGHT with you?
Every time you fill in an application form you are always asked to indicate allergies and symptoms. You need to list out difficulties and challenges you may have, tell me everything that is wrong with you.
During our professional development last year, I had an opportunity to listen to Mr. Justin Robinson and he promotes the theory and practices of Positive Education. Through his talk, I learned the importance of building a culture of positivity in our school and particularly in our classroom. We will be putting together a character strength display and I need your help.
The topic is What Is RIGHT With You? The task is to write a letter to your child sharing their positive character traits. Sometimes we get carried away focusing on all the negative things and not acknowledging all the positive things. It’s always nice to be reminded and recognized for all the good things we do, particularly from our parents. Your contribution to this task will make a big difference for your child. We will share these letters in class and will be displaying them.
DEADLINE: Monday February 3rd, 2020.

Congratulations Liam for receiving Student of the Week!
Being able to explore Kadoorie Farm and Science Museum gave us a lot to learn and think about this week. At Kadoorie Farm, we had a beautiful nature hike, visited animals, gardens and fruit forest. It was amazing to see and learn how the farm is helping us maintain a sustainable living environment. We also got to visit and learn about many rescued animals there. At the Science Museum, we visited many different exhibits, challenged ourselves to different games and activities. Thank you to all the parents for always supporting our experiential learning trips.
Next week, we will have an oral presentation on our Science Rock research project and Early Society inquiry project. We will have an assessment on Fractions and perform our early society dance. We will also paint our monochromatic art.
Please remember to return the student grant form, Foodstep Journey (Food Angel) field trip form and extracurricular form.

Students will be eating lunch at the museum, please have them bring a small backpack big enough to hold their lunch and water bottle. We will have snacks in school. Students will not need to bring their laptops tomorrow, but they would need to hand in their CCF and Math worksheet.

Students will be carrying their own backpacks the entire time. Please choose a small compact size that is easy to carry and big enough for their belongings. Students should be wearing their PE uniform and sport/running shoes. If they choose to wear any outer layers or caps, it must also be a school cap.

Happy New Year! I hope the families had a well-rested holiday.
We are happy to have Maella and Albert join our class this week, the class was very warm and welcoming.
We wrote a new year's resolution for 2020. We will work hard towards achieving our goal. Ask your child what is their new year's resolution. In Literacy, we went through the writing process in writing a story about our winter break. We will start Daily 5 and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory next week. In writing, we will start our Science Rock and Mineral and Social Studies early society inquiry research project. In Math, we will start Fractions and Decimals.
Just a friendly reminder to sign up for ECA term 2 clubs (via email) and also students took home a white envelope for Hong Kong Government grant, please have it filled in and return by February 13th.
We are looking forward to Kadoorie Farm field trip on Wednesday January 15th and our Science Museum field trip on Friday January 17th.

We had a great final week of school for year 2019. We had 4 STEAM challenges that required a lot of Math, Science and Art knowledge. It was a lot of fun playing with snow, designing our snowflake, building a tree and creating a candy cane maze.
Students presented their Genius Hour projects and we will have a fresh start on our next project in January.
Today we had our first ever Winter Sing-Along, students all gathered together in the auditorium and sang winter songs with our 3 musical talented teachers; Mr. Anderson, Mr. Softly and Ms. O. It was so much fun! To top off the morning, we got a surprised visit from Santa. We were so happy we made the 'nice' list and received a treat from him.
Here's wishing all the families a Happy, Healthy Winter Holiday. All the Best in 2020.

In Literacy, we finished our Bio Poems and will be starting Daily 5 next week. In Math, we are working on Time. In Social Studies, we are finishing our book creator books. In Science, we will review rocks and minerals. We will have our medieval dance assessment next week.

A big welcome to Zelie who joined our class this week. We were sad to say goodbye to Kevin, we will miss him and wish him the very best.
Students are preparing for their Poetry Presentation, they will be presenting Monday. We have learned a few other kinds of poetry; ask your child about Diamante, Exaggeration and Limerick poems. In Math, we will start our Time Unit. In Social Studies, we are working on our book creator books. In Science, we will have an assessment on rocks and minerals. What is the difference? What are the attributes of a mineral? In dance, the students are planning their own medieval inspired dance.

They have already chosen their poem, it will be great if they can practice performing it in front of an audience to help them prepare for it. In Math, we have completed our 4 digit addition. Students received their assessments today. We will start 4 digit subtraction next week. In Science, we are learning about rocks and minerals. Ask your child what is the difference and explain the 3 types of rocks. In Social Studies, we are imagining what life would be in early society and comparing it to our present life in Hong Kong.

Today is World's Kindness Day! Our quote of the week is “Three things in human life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. And the third is to be kind.” We spread a lot of kindness today. It was such a great feeling receiving and spreading kindness. At our House Activity today, we pledged to be kind to 3 different people each day. Let's work on that!
Today in STEAM class, we learned to make a Wevideo, students can continue this project at home. In Literacy class, we learned about Simile's and Metaphors. Ask your child the difference between the two. In Math, we learned about growing patterns. We identified how each pattern grows and what the pattern rule is. In Social Studies, we are comparing the different social and political organization between Medieval England and Ancient Rome. In Science, we learned about light pollution and will compare the difference between light and sound. We are making stained glass art in Art class.

The progress report cards were sent home today, please make sure you have booked an appointment for next week. You may also book an appointment with the program teachers, directly from their online platform. Please check the school website for more information.
We have started a poetry unit in English, we are learning about different kinds of poems and have started to identify rhyming schemes, alliterations and assonance. In Math, we are learning about geometric patterns. We will have an assessment on repeating patterns on Monday. We will continue with growing and shrinking patterns. In Social Studies, we will learn about Medieval England and Ancient Rome's political structure and religious beliefs. In Science, we will be comparing light and sound. In Art, we will continue with our stained glass art and in dance, the students are working their Verb Dance. Have your child practice and show you at home.
The school will be holding a mini book fair at the school library starting next week. We will be visiting it during our library class. If your child would like to purchase a book, the prices range from $50-$150. You may also take your child to go visit the book fair between 3-5pm, next week.

Thank you to all the families for participating in our Halloween/Dress Casual Day event and also sharing treats with the class. We had a lot of fun playing house activities and doing rotations with Ms. O's class. Photos are shared in our October folder.
In English, we completed our comics and made a class comic book of William Tell, we also learned listening strategies to help us with our understanding. We will be starting poetry this week. In Math, we are learning about quadrilaterals, students will be having an assessment on Tuesday. We will start patterning in unit. In Social Studies, we are learning about Ancient Roman and Medieval England. We will be comparing family life/daily needs, political and social organization and religious beliefs. In Science, we will continue with our Light Unit.

Congratulations to Yin Yin for receiving Student of the Week!
Students did a good job with lockdown. They understood the importance of it and took it seriously. We finally made our mindful jars/bottle. We will keep these at school and use them when necessary.
In Social Studies, we started studying Medieval England and Ancient Rome, we are comparing the Environment and Farming. Ask your child to share some similarities and differences with you. In Science, we started our Light unit, we can't wait to try out some light experiments. In Math, we are learning about angles. In Literacy, we will be focusing on oral and listening next week and continuing Daily 5. Students received their reading assessment and art sculpture assessment as well.
We look forward to Thursday October 31st, 2019, Halloween & Community Chest Dress Casual Day. We will be playing house activities and visiting Gr. 5& 6 classes. There will also be clubs next week again!

Students did a good job with lockdown. They understood the importance of it and took it seriously. We finally made our mindful jars/bottle. We will keep these at school and use them when necessary.
In Social Studies, we started studying Medieval England and Ancient Rome, we are comparing the Environment and Farming. Ask your child to share some similarities and differences with you. In Science, we started our Light unit, we can't wait to try out some light experiments. In Math, we are learning about angles. Congratulations to Palkin for receiving Student of the Week!
Students completed their Literacy Legend story, Science Instrument, Social Studies Ancient Egyptian Trading Card and Art Sculpture assessment this week. It has been a super busy week!
We have already started our Transitional Geometry unit in Math and will continue with 2D Shapes. In Literacy, we will move into Media Literacy; comics and listening. In Science, we will start our Light unit. In Social Studies, we will study Medieval England. In Dance, we are learning about Tempo and Pathways.
We will have a practice 'Lockdown Drill' on Wednesday. Two field trip forms have gone home today, please sign and return them asap.

Congratulations to Liam for receiving Student of the Week!
We had some calming and soothe mindfulness activities for Mental Health Awareness Week. We will continue to include these activities into our school day. Students are requested to bring a jar or bottle to school. It can be glass or plastic, big or small. Thank you!
In English this week, we have started writing our legends. Students are using templates to plan and organize their stories. Ask them to share their legend with you. We will be publishing the legends next week and they will submit a typed copy. It would be a great idea to keep practicing their typing skills.
In Math, we will have a Capacity and Mass assessment. As a review, they can look over their worksheets they've done in class or play the assigned Prodigy activities. Don't forget to fill in the Water Tally Sheet!
In Social Studies and Art, we are completing our Ancient Egyptian assessment. Students are designing their trading card and painting their sculptures next week.
In Science, students are making their instrument and will practice presenting it. They will demonstrate the high and low pitch, loud and soft sounds. They should be able to explain why and when it makes a high pitch, low pitch, soft and loud sound. We can't wait to listen to them.

In English, we started studying legends, if you have any to share with your child that would be great. Ask your child what a legend is and the ones we are studying in class. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we have read up to chapter 6. Students are encouraged to go over their work before they submit their novel study sheets, I am finding a lot of careless mistakes such as; capital letters, spelling and punctuation marks. It would be a good habit to reread their work before they submit.
In Math, we are learning about Capacity. Students will be ask to record the capacity of liquids they take a day. This will help them make aware of how much they drink and ensure that they are taking sufficient amounts.
In Science, we are learning about reflective and absorption sounds. Have your child explain to you what they are.
In Social Studies and Art we are preparing for an Ancient Egyptian God/Goddess assessment. Students will be creating their own God/Goddess and will present it in a clay model. Ask your child about their creation.
In Dance, we are learning about Asymmetrical and Symmetrical Dances, they will be coming up with their own and will be soon able to present it to you soon.

Every morning we have been starting with a motivational quote and discuss our own social emotional feelings. This week's discussions have been;

These will be great dinner conversations with your child, have them share their answers with you.
Today we had a special STEAM project with Mr. Waller and Mr. Hendrickse. We learned a program called Tinkercad. We will be using this program to make cool 3D art projects. Have your child show you how it works.
In Literacy, we learned the last Daily 5 activity, which is Word Work. We learned the importance of correct spelling and how it is an essential foundation for writers. We will continue using different tools in helping us improve our spelling.
In Math, we are working on patterning and have been reviewing the different kinds of patterns. It would be a great idea to give your child a few different patterns and have them extend it and tell you the pattern rule and vice versa.
In Social Studies/Art, we are studying an Egyptian God/Goddesses. Students have been told that it's important to learn about other religions so that we can be respectful and considerate of other people, and that learning about a different religion doesn't mean that he/she has to believe it's true. We're learning about what people believed in ancient Egypt so that we can understand their society better.
FYI Students have been informed that if they misplaced a worksheet, I will be using their student card to print off a new one. I hope this will help them become more responsible starting next week.

We had our first Math assessment today and I will return these next week. We continued building our reading, writing stamina. We have reached over 20 minutes with Reading to Someone and 13 minutes with Working on Writing. We received our student cards today and will be taking out 1-2 library books next Monday.
There are students who have yet to complete their Egypt cover page and Nile River worksheet. Please remind your child to check their bag for their homework and help ensure that it is completed for Monday.
Please bring a breakaway lanyard (for the library card) and a headphone or earbuds for school.

Students have been building incredible reading stamina. In our Read to Self sessions, we have reached over 20 minutes! I am astounded!! Students have demonstrated our learning goals and success criteria. They display an urgency to read and is independently engaged in their chosen books. Today we have introduced Read to Someone and our first comprehension skill from our CAFE menu; check for understanding. Ask your child what book they are reading and join them in building their reading stamina. Also ask your child, how to check for understanding.
In Math, we have reviewed the unit 2 lessons 1 to 3. Students practiced representing whole numbers in standard, expanded and written form. They are able to compare numbers, order them from greatest to least and use the place value chart. We will have our first Math assessment on Friday September 13th. At home, you can give them practice questions to work on as well as review our worksheets and workbook pages. I have also started assigning Mathletics and Prodigy assignments that are related to our lessons.
In Social Studies, we have introduced Egypt. Ask your child why the Nile River was important to ancient Egyptians. How did the Sahara Desert helped stopped enemies from coming? We will be looking into the Social and Political Organizations. This will be a great dinner discussion with your child, as many of them are coming up with a lot interesting questions.

What a great start to school. I am happy to see how keen and excited the students were coming to class and being responsible with their laptops. We had an ECA assembly today and they are very excited to sign up for Term 1 ECAs. You will get more information via email this weekend and on Monday evening, you will be given a link to sign up.
In Literacy Class, students have been working on building their reading stamina. I am very impressed to see how many minutes we have reached so far. Ask your child what was our longest time. We are also working on our writing stamina. We have learned the importance of a "good fit" book, and we will have the opportunity to visit the Library regularly on Mondays to choose good fit books.
We launched our first STEAM activity and Genius Hour. Students were super excited and were able to use their time well; thinking, planning and exploring their passion. Ask your child what their interest were and how far did they get with their ideas. It would also be nice to have your input in their creation.
Please help ensure that your child has their own stationery at school, particularly glue, colours and scissors. Also, the PE Uniforms are only to be worn on Mondays and Thursdays.
